Elvey Network Upgrade
Tue, 31 Jan, 2012
The Office of Information Technology is replacing the campus-wide analog phone system with a Voice over IP (VOIP) system. The Elvey Building is scheduled for VoIP in the Summer 2012.
The VoIP system requires Category 5 Enhanced (Cat5e) network cabling. Elvey floors 5, 6 and 7 do not meet this specification and must be rewired. This is great news as it means those floors will have network cabling that will support a 100x faster connection than is currently available.
CRC Help Desk
We have set up a new service, the CRC Help Desk, that should make our services even more accessible. We have a new phone number that rings at everyone's desk, 474-6800. Now, instead of calling us sequentially until you reach someone at their desk, you only need call one number and someone will answer.
Computer Refresh
Director McCoy as asked CRC to develop a plan to refresh the Institute's desktop computers on a regular basis. Generating an inventory of current equipment is the first step in that process. Please take our survey and tell us about your computer. The more comprehensive our information, the better our refresh plan will be so encourage your office-mates to fill out the short survey, too. The survey is hosted 100% in-house so there's no need to worry about SurveyMonkey or other web services building a profile on you. It is also anonymous, though you are more than welcome to give us your name.

The Computer Resource Center has been working with the University of Alaska's Office of Information Technology to make ArcGIS and Erdas software more affordable. Effective immediately, OIT will be administering license issuance for these products at no charge. Contact the OIT Help Desk at 450-8300 or x8300 on campus to begin the licensing process or go online to https://www.alaska.edu/oit/software/authenticate/files/windows-applicati....
As in previous years, Dayne Ellanna will remain available to provide technical support for either product. Technical support will be charged out on an hourly rate now instead of bundled into the purchase price of the licenses. Contact Dayne at 474-5057 for assistance.

The Computer Resource Center has installation CDs for 32 and 64 Windows 7. Many people are quite happy with Windows 7 as it is easy to use and stable. Reports are that it is much more stable than Windows Vista. Win7 should install without difficulty on any computer capable of running Vista. Recent computers running XP might be able to run Win7.
